Encouraging children with autism and their parents to have fun with the hard stuff

The last couple of months have been slighty bonkers . . .

First, I must apologise for not posting for what seems like ages, but now seemed the right time to share what I have been up to. There are three things, no, actually four, if you count the story I’m writing about a woman who is on the verge of a breakdown, that might be based on some of what has happened to me over the last couple of months (Write what you know and all that).

New Books Are Out

I’m thrilled to announce publication of not one, but three new books:

Out of Sight, Out of Mind: The Abysmal Octogenarians: A darkly comic underwater adventure featuring the elderly, sinister facilities, and bureaucratic chaos. Imagine One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest meets Finding Nemo, but with more denture adhesive. FREE on Kindle until until Saturday 7th June 2025.

The Moon Blinked Back: A lyrical picture book for curious children aged 3 – 6. It tells the story of a child discovering the moon, which is actually the wise eye of a dinosaur watching over Earth. The paperback version of this will be out later today, but it is currently FREE on Kindle until Saturday 7th June 2025.

Little Wings, Big Dreams: A fantasy story for children aged 9+, which is full of dragons, glitter, and the pressure to perform. Smolder (the reluctant hero) has wings like soggy crisps and zero desire to compete, but fame has other ideas. Think Strictly Come Dancing meets Crufts. FREE on Kindle until Saturday 7th June 2025.

ALL OF THESE BOOKS AND MY OTHERS ARE AVAILABLE ON AMAZON.

PhD Update (and a plea for help)

As part of my PhD, I’m exploring how we can co-create personalised stories for children on the autistic spectrum using AI and family input. Stories that spark joy, soothe anxiety, and reflect their interests.

But here’s the thing: I still need at least 13 more parents to take part. If you’re a parent of a child on the spectrum aged 5 -7 or you know one, please get in touch. It’s low-pressure, rewarding, and can be done entirely online.

email awoolgar@bournemouth.ac.uk or check out this page and please share it as far and as wide as possible. The National Autistic Society has so it can’t be like my usual mad ideas!

What I’m Writing Now…

I’m currently working on a new novel, a darkly funny story about a middle-aged woman who quietly implodes under the weight of passive-aggressive neighbours, family expectations, and her beige-themed existence – sound familiar?!

If you’ve read my work, thank you for your support. If you haven’t, now’s the perfect time to.

And, please, if you know any families who might want to help me with my research, I’d be forever grateful if you could share.

Abbey 🙂
